About this Event

Do we relate with colleagues, friends and family less if we see only a part of them through the rectangular screen? What happens to the rest of our bodies that fall out of the screen?

Artist Rosana Antoli researches gestures that we repeat in our daily lives, revealing the structures, rhythm and connections they entail in our society. In this dialogue moderated by ArtBizTech, Rosana will share her perspective on bodily movement in shared experience by contrasting concepts of fluidity and rupture. Her presentation will prompt audiences to question if seamlessness in the design of products, cities, and spaces is always desirable. Could there be a natural resistance in our bodies that we are ignoring?

When human connection is established through the screen, might we be better off thinking about the screen as less of a flat, dividing surface and more of a porous material through which we collaborate?

Circuit is a flow of inquiry between ArtBizTech, the audience and an artist, but instead of talking about art we dive into the research that forms an artist’s practice. Meet Rosana

Rosana Antolí is a visual artist based in London. Her practice is multidisciplinary, moving across drawing, painting, sculpture and video, always embracing a performative methodology within. Antolí obtained her MA in Performance and Sculpture at Royal College of Art in London in 2015. From 2015 until 2017 she was a selected Member of Royal British Society of Sculptors (UK) and since 2015 she is on the International Advisory Board for the Institute of Social Choreography.

Rosana Antolí’s work is exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, having been commissioned among others by: Tate Modern Museum (UK), CentroCentro Cibeles Palace (ES), The RYDER (UK), Pompidou Museum (ES), Da2 Museum (ES), Artium Vitoria Museum (ES) , Zabludowicz Collection (UK), BBVA Foundation (ES), Joan Miro Foundation (ES), Sotheby’s London (UK), Wifredo Lam Museum (CU) and CA2M (ES).

She has been awarded among others with Generaciones Art Prize (Madrid, Spain, 2016), Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary Award (London, UK, 2015), Gasworks International Fellowship (UK-Colombia, 2015), 2015 MULTIVERSE Grant for Video Art Creation by BBVA Foundation (Spain, 2015), International Emerging Artist Award (Dubai, 2014) or Pilar Juncosa and Sotheby’s Grant (Spain, 2012).

“Has anyone in your research team used a kitchen machine before?”

Grinding the meat to mince, keeping the consistency of the dough, grating tomatoes… We were not experienced in these matters. That’s why we conducted our pilot test to gain experience. So we got to know the product well enough to guide users in the right direction during testing. We started the project after consulting our mothers, who are the most competent experts on the subject and learning the subtleties of the job.

Listening Users

hurriyetemlak.com is an important online channel for the real estate industry. Mehmet Belet (Head of UI / UX) and Yasin Coşkun (E-Business UI / UX Manager) Met with UXservices.

The Usability Test roadmap was determined first within the scope of the work we conducted for Hürriyet Emlak Corporate web pages.

To determine the user audience ( persona ), which is the first step in the roadmap ;
– What does Hürriyet Emlak mean to its users?
– How often and for what purposes is Hürriyet Emlak used by its users?
– What common features do users have in terms of usage?
– What are the common transactions made by users at Hürriyet Emlak?
– What are the transactions that users do with ease and difficulty on Hürriyet Emlak?

Common user groups were created by searching for answers to such questions. Factors such as the frequency of use, their contribution to Hürriyet Emlak, and their impact on the environment were evaluated and prioritized, and the personas with whom we would conduct usability test interviews were determined.

After determining the personnel, the processes to be tested within the usability test were prioritized.

Test scenarios were prepared by asking questions such as which operations are critical for which persona, what areas to be observed and what areas to be considered.

Are WE ready? Preparations were completed with a pilot test before going out on the field.

Defining The UX Strategy

Avis team, as a team that knows its customers very well and cares about their expectations, came to the first meeting with the user experience problems they aimed to solve. We drew a route together to discuss a common UX strategy and shed light on the actions to be taken during the project.

What was the main goal of the Avis team with this project?

• Improving the digital channel experience and reducing call center traffic

Concept Design

Some of the basic principles we attach importance to during the design process:

• Good design offers easy navigation to the user.
• Good design shows the answers in the right place at the right time to clear the question marks in their mind without the user having to click anywhere: Does the vehicle model I choose change? What are the additional service fees? What are the assurance options? What are the payment options? …
• Good design is ergonomic design: It does not force the user to make critical choices in tight spaces, it allows the user to interact with the interface in an ergonomic way.

2- You are also involved in UX local communities. Would you like to share some more about this Organization?
Yes, I’m very active on the Irish UX scene; I brought to Ireland the “UXcamp Dublin” un-conference, and I co-organise the monthly Dublin UX meetup. I’m currently working on establishing the Irish “Service Design Network” chapter, and soon we’ll launch “Service Design Drinks” a meetup for Service Design enthusiasts. It’s a lot of work, but also a lot of fun!
My motto is “Never stop learning”. Design as a discipline is very practical and pragmatic: Designers love to explore, experiment, disrupt, innovate and improve by learning from their mistakes; nowadays, thanks to the internet, it is very easy to access and share contents through digital and social media, and to learn everyday new things; I find all this very fascinating, but I’m a strong supporter of human empathy and social+analog interactions. I believe that designers can still benefit a lot from the analog world, and I see a local design community as an empowering tool that will help designer to grow, improve and innovate by sharing, learning, critiquing and co-creating. No matter how experienced you are, if you are doing something great, you should share it; and if you don’t know something, these social events offer a great opportunity to learn about it.
Local Design communities help strangers to became acquaintances, enable single individuals to become and feel part of something, offer the opportunity to learn things that for several reasons (business, privacy, etc) cannot be shared online, and  help you to get recognition for your work and either provide or request support to other designers.
All these social events offer great opportunities for networking. I’ve met a lot of interesting people and many talented designers who are willing to share their great stories and put forth their work from their design closet. Quite often, people get in touch with me after these gatherings. They ask me different kinds of things, including but not limited to: career & study path advice, opinions & critiques on their projects, feedback on their portfolios, etc. It’s great when people reach out to me! It makes me feel like I’m doing something relevant for them and the local community, plus I feel better about myself when I can provide this little help to other people. I recognise that sharing your knowledge and coaching people has a great value. I wish I had somebody who could have guided me and offered me advice at the beginning of my career.
Together with a bunch of talented designers and good friends, we shaped the idea of a not-for-profit collective for design professionals to coach other designers. By this, we also share our love for design; we called it ‘Design Mentors’ (https://twitter.com/DesignMentors) and we aim to help and mentor a growing number of designers without geographical limits.

3- You seem to be well experienced in a broad range of domains, industries and countries. How did those diversities affect your career?
I have always had this desire for learning and discovering new things. I’m a very proactive person and I love to push myself to the limit. I think these characteristics of my personality helped to shape my attitude and my way of doing design. I believe exploring and dealing with diversity has affected my career very positively. In the beginning, I didn’t have a very clear plan; all I knew was that I wanted to experience as much as I could, and as soon as possible. I have tried to combine my “addiction to design” with my love for travel.
Moving to a new country, rather than visiting it, allows you to experience its socio-cultural context on a different level, to seize all those nuances that a rushed tourist will never get. Living in a country that is culturally different to the one where you were born, means experiencing something new every day and dealing with this cultural clash subtly and slowly changes your way of thinking and behaving, often positively. Working in a different country makes you face different business realities, brings you to interact with other people that are culturally different from you and to deal with your limits, especially those related to the language barrier. I have built my career journey on the go, always trying to be pragmatic and choosing things that are related to and expansive upon what I did before. I have ended up serving in a broad range of roles, and designing digital products and services in several sectors and cultural contexts. I’m very happy with the choices I made. I feel I have being doing the right thing, and that I should stick to my plan for another while.
To those designers that ask me advice on their career path, I often recommend to travel, to move somewhere new and experience something different from what they already know, especially if they are young. You never know what might happen, and even the worst experiences will teach you something and maybe present you with an opportunity.

4- You will be delivering a Keynote at 3rd UXistanbul Conference. What will be your speech’s subject?
I’ll talk about Service Design, a relatively new discipline that is changing the design landscape and the market. The way consumers are spending their money is changing. We have shifted from “buy and own a product” to “use it when you need it”. A growing number of companies are adopting Service Design to deliver new outcomes to their customers, and I’m going to talk about this transformation.

5- With general terms, what is “Service Design”, where could we use it?
Service Design is the activity of designing, planning and organising a complex system, considering its processes and the users and the actors that belong to it. Service Designers consider how human beings interact with each other and with the system, and what are the tools — either digital or analog — that they use. Service Design can be applied to any field, from healthcare to IT systems, including government and public sectors, to guarantee social innovation.

6- Is “Service Design Thinking” a subset of “Service Design” or it is more than that?
As mentioned in the book This is Service Design Thinking, Service Design is interdisciplinary. To design and innovate services, Service Designers use a broad range of tools that belong not only to design, but also to other fields like management, marketing, engineering, psychology, architecture, and ethnography. The framework that enables these disciplines to work efficiently together is called Service Design Thinking.

7- Have you experienced considerable variations between domains, company scales or locations while you were designing services?
Service Design takes into consideration the whole context in which the service is delivered, and Service Designers rely considerably on ethnographic research to learn about its socio-cultural aspects and the users.
From the point of view of the location, each project has been different. I particularly enjoyed the time I spent working in China, since I had the possibility to learn a lot about the locals, their culture, the context they live in and their habits, by interacting directly with them.
Service Design uses and shares tools that belong to other disciplines like Interaction Design, User Research and Human Computer Interaction. As Service Design is a new discipline, not all of the companies where I worked before had an established framework to practice it. I started my career working as an Interaction Designer. At that time, job positions as a Service Designer were almost non-existent and there was a lot of inaccuracy around Service Design practice. Recently, things changed, and a growing number of companies are now looking at how they can apply it. Different companies operate in different sectors and have different ways to approach Service Design. The dynamic of change varies considerably according to the scale of the company and the level of multidisciplinarity of the design team involved in the process. At IBM, we use our IBM Design Thinking framework to break down silos and collaborate across disciplines. We take care of the whole process — from the primary user research with Sponsor Users, to the final implementation of the service. We work with our clients and their end users from the very early stages of the process. The end users are at the heart of the process, and they participate in several co-creative sessions forming a core team with extended team members, and contributing to the creation of an eco-system of products and services.

8- Do you think “Service Design” approach is embedded at IBM?
In the last 10 months I’ve been working with my team to introduce Service Design into IBM Design practice. More specifically, we worked to integrate it into the existing IBM Design Thinking framework by introducing new tools and approaches. After several iterations, we are at a very good point, and later this year, we’ll share a more solid version of our framework with the general public.

9- Do you think “Design Thinking” approach is also applicable to governmental activities, too? What might be the possible outcomes and benefits of it?
This is a proven fact. Service Design and Design Thinking have been successfully applied to the government and public sectors, especially in the United Kingdom, where Service Design is a well-recognised discipline that has been largely used to improve and simplify public services, enabling the government to save money by streamlining bureaucracy and processes, and improving citizens’ experiences of the services and their access to them.

2- You are also one of the organizers of a community in US: “Designers + Geeks”. Would you like to share some more about this Organization?

Yes, this is a serious passion project of mine. Designers + Geeks is a community for people interested in design, art, and technology. We host monthly events that feature great speakers on interesting topics. We’ve grown the community to over 20,000 people in just a few years! I believe we all have the power to build the communities we want to be a part of – just as UXIstanbul is doing.

3- You will be delivering a Keynote at 3rd UXistanbul Conference. What will be your speech’s subject?

Title: Impact & Design Culture
Description: By definition, culture is the manifestation of collective human intellectual achievement. In the design world, culture is not your color palette or your preferred typeface. Design culture is the result of how you act on your values and beliefs. In this talk, I will discuss the phases of building design culture and the approach different companies across Silicon Valley employ.

4- With general terms, what is “Design Culture”?

Design culture is the belief system that drives action in design. This means the methodology, decision making processes behind your work, the values you communicate through design, and what is reflected in the problems you solve and the people you work for. In short, design culture is how your actions reflect your beliefs.

5- What kind of dynamics are featured while building a design culture in an organization?

Communication, power dynamics, and organizational design are all components of building design culture, regardless of company size.

6- While building a design culture, are there significant differences between startups, agencies and corporations?

Yes, somewhat. The core components of culture are the same, but scale with team size and working models. For example, the agency model is built around client relationships while corporations have a different type of relationship with their customers. These two models require different methods for decision making, which inherently impact culture.

7- Is building a design culture a process that has an actual finish line or it is more like to be a never-ending journey? Why?

In Silicon Valley, there is a common belief that when you stop growing you die. This can be said about companies, products, and culture. I believe that as long as your company is growing, your culture must scale with it. This means we all have to stay self-critical, invest in continuous improvement, and put systems in place that work for the people doing work alongside you.

While I was at Square, I saw the company grow from 100 to 2,000 employees. There was a ritual of meeting as an entire company each week to discuss design, product, and growth. Every touch point in these meetings were designed, from the keynote to the key points. These meetings helped build a common cultural language that the entire company shared.

Now that I lead design programs at Facebook, I get to work with new-hires from the beginning of their Facebook journeys. In huge classrooms every week, we educate new-hires on our values, our practices, and their responsibility as new designers. These programs ensure that we maintain our core design culture as we grow week over week. Rituals like these can be cultivated by any size team to help further beliefs and practices.

8- In Facebook, could we say that this culture is embedded deeply in Company’s DNA?

Yes, absolutely. Facebook’s mission is to connect the world. This translates into design culture that thinks deeply about every community on this planet, that builds tools that are free and available to all, and believes that design holds an important seat at the table.

9- Will we be able to hear some “things to come” from Facebook at your Keynote?

Yes, I will talk about how our company is growing and what we will do to cultivate the design culture we want to see in the world.

10- Do you think that this approach is also applicable to governmental activities, too? What might be the possible outcomes and benefits of it?

Absolutely! The 2008 Obama campaign was among the first political campaigns to leverage modern design and web technology to accept donations. By building a hardworking, fast moving design team, they were able to translate their beliefs into an optimistic campaign. This couldn’t have happened without the right people and support systems in place.

If design were applied to the rest of government, we would have better transportation systems, voting tools, access to information, and unified platforms. Many governments rely on the inefficiencies that design prevents, which is how things break down for the public. In the words of my friend Stewart Scott-Curran, Design is inherently political. It’s a method for expressing our beliefs and paving the way to our future.

11- Anything you might want to add?

I’m looking forward to connecting with the design community of Istanbul. This is an amazing learning opportunity for me and I hope to gain fresh perspective on design. The usability tests of the website and mobile application of tazedirek.com, which has successfully entered the organic food sector and provides services to its customers with the assurance of Aslanoba Group, have been completed. The aim of tazedirekt.com, which preferred UXservices, which has considerable experience in user experience design and usability testing, was to find out what difficulties users encounter while using the website and mobile application and to find solutions to them.

The first step in the work done by UXservices was to create the right personas to reach the appropriate users for testing. In the studies, two personas were created and tests were carried out with users selected from each persona in their own environment (home, workplace, cafe, etc.) Tests were carried out in two phases. First of all, tests of the responsive website on desktop, tablet, and mobile were completed. Then, the tests of the mobile application were carried out and the usability reports of both phases were presented separately.

User Observation

The feedback and findings obtained from the users were also proof of how accurately the personas were created. The reactions and comments made by the users while viewing the site were recorded one by one. User behavior observed by UXservices usability experts was noted to be evaluated according to heuristic criteria.

The tasks requested from the users were evaluated and scored according to the international usability criteria (5E criteria: Efficiency, Effectiveness, Easy to Learn, Error Tolerant, Engaging).

The tests were completed with the SUS (System Usability Scale) questionnaire applied to each user. The answers to the SUS questionnaire given by each persona for the website and mobile application were reported separately.

Migros TV, the new project of Migros, which has always aimed to offer new services to its users with its strategy of being an innovative supermarket chain, takes the customer experience one step further.

On Migros TV, it is possible to find instructional videos in categories that can attract everyone’s attention;

• Beauty care,
• Technology, health life,
• Mother-child,
• How to do it,
• Home care.

Migros aimed to determine the habits of the users and offer the most suitable platform to the users by having a usability test performed on this platform, where MigrosTV wanted to offer a more comfortable user experience to its users. As UXservices, we conducted A / B usability tests of both mobile and web versions of the application with a total of 15 people from the user profiles we determined in collaboration with our customers.
