Arçelik / Beko Kitchen Machine Product Team wanted to get feedback from users and evaluate its usability through the high-maturity prototype of the product before launching its products to the market. We supported the Arçelik team in this process with the Usability Tests and User Observation setup to be carried out with real users in the field, namely housewives and chefs.

“Has anyone in your research team used a kitchen machine before?”

Grinding the meat to mince, keeping the consistency of the dough, grating tomatoes… We were not experienced in these matters. That’s why we conducted our pilot test to gain experience. So we got to know the product well enough to guide users in the right direction during testing. We started the project after consulting our mothers, who are the most competent experts on the subject and learning the subtleties of the job.

Some Challenges We Overcome in the Project

For tests, users opened their kitchens for us, and the price was a pleasant mess. When conducting these types of tests, we strongly recommend that you demonstrate your sensitivity by helping the homeowner to clear up the clutter.

In the classical digital product tests we were in the field, while we were going to the test location with our computer in our bag, things were a bit more 'heavy' this time. We carried our product to the kitchen of 10 users in total. And this product was definitely not designed to be "mobile".

If one of the test tasks is "Make dough", you have taken this job lightly. You should not risk disliking your recipe and leave the right dough consistency selection directly to the recipe of the user. In this way, you will prevent the debate on whether the dough is soggy / hard / in the earlobe that may arise later.

Even if your test participants are selected from the right target audience, how many of them could be masters of using a tomato shredder ?! In product-user interaction, you must allow the user to discover and learn. Users often tend to blame themselves for interactions with which they are difficult; “… I think I broke it”, “… I am very incompetent”. Remember it is your duty to inculcate them.

Simple is Difficult

Listening Users

hurriyetemlak.com is an important online channel for the real estate industry. Mehmet Belet (Head of UI / UX) and Yasin Coşkun (E-Business UI / UX Manager) Met with UXservices.

The Usability Test roadmap was determined first within the scope of the work we conducted for Hürriyet Emlak Corporate web pages.

To determine the user audience ( persona ), which is the first step in the roadmap ;
– What does Hürriyet Emlak mean to its users?
– How often and for what purposes is Hürriyet Emlak used by its users?
– What common features do users have in terms of usage?
– What are the common transactions made by users at Hürriyet Emlak?
– What are the transactions that users do with ease and difficulty on Hürriyet Emlak?

Common user groups were created by searching for answers to such questions. Factors such as the frequency of use, their contribution to Hürriyet Emlak, and their impact on the environment were evaluated and prioritized, and the personas with whom we would conduct usability test interviews were determined.

After determining the personnel, the processes to be tested within the usability test were prioritized.

Test scenarios were prepared by asking questions such as which operations are critical for which persona, what areas to be observed and what areas to be considered.

Are WE ready? Preparations were completed with a pilot test before going out on the field.

Tatilsepeti.com, which has been providing important services in the digital tourism sector in Turkey for many years and known for the importance it attaches to user experience, reached its real users and requested a comprehensive user research and measuring the usability of their sites.

Desk Research

Like every usability test study, the first days of our Tatilsepeti project were spent at the desk with brainstorming and analysis sessions. In a study where we will meet with users in the field, preliminary preparations had to be carried out flawlessly in order to reach the right users and ask the right questions.

Strategy Workshop, Persona Workshop, Preparation of Tasks and Scenarios, and finally Finding Real Users were some of the project steps we carried out before we landed on the field for the Tatilsepeti.com project.

Field Research

Instead of using a ready-made laboratory environment while conducting user interviews of the Tatilsepeti project, we wanted to visit the users in places where they feel more comfortable.

In our study, we wanted to observe users as they realize their dream vacation plans from start to finish. So, after having a conversation about the users’ vacation habits, we asked them where they would like to spend their summer vacation. While the users were making the reservation of the holiday they dreamed of on the HolidaySepeti website as a test task, we were both observing and experiencing the joy of the holiday together. During the tests, we have never forgotten that; We had to focus on what and how the user was doing, in addition to what the user said.

What Did We Find Out?

After completing our fieldwork, it was now time to analyze the results and arrive at usability findings. Usability findings we detected during this process provided us with very useful information about users. Some of what we learned were:

We learned that the users want the total price information about the holiday they will book to be clearly stated in accordance with the search criteria made at every stage of the process, and this is one of the most important needs.

We understood that it is very important for users to be able to see the facilities that meet the criteria they are looking for, and for this, the filtering and sorting functions, especially on the listing pages, must be user-friendly.

We have learned that when incomprehensible and unclear warning messages appear in the system regarding room availability and other requirements, users are hesitant to complete their reservations.

We realized that there were also users who wanted to complete their reservation at the call center, but these users were afraid that when they called the call center, they would be asked again for the information they entered through the system.

Bilgi University’s website renewal project has been completed, and is live!

In this project, we took part in the design of the user experience up to the information architecture stage under the leadership of the University’s Visual Design team and we share the happiness of having the website live!

In this case study, we wanted to talk about the story of an enjoyable and successful project, full of learning.

Purpose & Objectives of The Project

The main purpose of the project was to ensure that the Bilgi.edu.tr website to be modernized – naturally (!) – was designed in a more user-oriented and usable way for the target users.

However, while doing this, one of the primary goals of the project was to construct the new website as a “hub” and to create a successful navigation on the site where many different user profiles will visit.

Methodology

We determined our methodology and technical set at the beginning of the project in order to carry out the work in the most accurate way.

We applied techniques such as

– Data analysis – Netnographic research
– Contextual interview
– Card sorting

Implementation

We know that the basis for designing the user experience is to develop strategies / concepts based on empathy. With this approach, we carried out the following activities with the support of the University’s Visual Design team.

01. Persona Studies

  •  Prospective students (domestic, international, undergraduate, associate degree, graduate)
  • Current students (domestic, international, undergraduate, associate, graduate)
  • Graduate students
  • Academics
  • Parents
  • University staff

02. Insight Research

We interviewed each profile / persona in their own context. Some of the insights we arrived at by synthesizing these interview findings were:

  • For university staff, quick access to accurate and satisfactory information was essential.
  • The first contact point for foreign student candidates was the website. In their communication with the team, they needed to access satisfactory content from the web instead of prolonged correspondence.
  • It was important for all stakeholders to be able to reflect the culture, values ​​and opportunities of the university.
  • The purpose and motivation of using the website for current students and prospective students were very different from each other.
  • The most different behavior pattern among all these profiles was followed by the parents.

“Now, think of Bilgi University as a human being,” we said at a workshop with prospective high school students.
“You have 5 minutes to chat and ask questions, what would you ask?”
Their answers to the question also guided us.

03. Scope Study

With the data we obtained as a result of the research, we presented the content strategy according to the answers given to the question of “what kind of website should it be”. We determined the homepage messages of the website.

04. Bilgi Mimarisi Tasarımı

As a result of our scope work, some of the goals we set while setting up the new information architecture design were as follows:

  • To ensure the visibility of the events at the university.
  • To provide an environment where faculty and department pages can reflect their own worlds.
  • To ensure that foreign students can quickly access the information they are looking for.

Result

We explained the final information architecture design to all relevant units and handed it over to the Visual Design team for implementation. We have enjoyed the experience that the new site that went live is much more successful from the usability perspective.

Avis took a step and met with us in order to make its users experience the digital experience of its mission of being a ‘lovemark’ for its customers. We share the joy of the publication of the project, which we have been continuing with enthusiasm, from user interviews to concept screen designs.

Defining The UX Strategy

Avis team, as a team that knows its customers very well and cares about their expectations, came to the first meeting with the user experience problems they aimed to solve. We drew a route together to discuss a common UX strategy and shed light on the actions to be taken during the project.

Determining UX Research Methods

After the UX Strategy was determined, we set out to plan what we would focus on during the research. We segmented the users and created question sets specific to their expectations. We contacted users with one-on-one user interviews and online surveys, and the very important insights we obtained guided us during the design process.

#1 Easy and Efficient Use

Based on the feedback of users, it can be said that the main expectation from a car rental website is easy to use. The main expectation was that the data were provided in accurate, clear language, and consistent.

For example; users were waiting to see how much discount they earned by using the discount code, and the total amount was renewed, depending on the rental period selection.

Most users said that, based on their overall digital experience, the differences in assurance options were hard to understand.

Concept Design

Some of the basic principles we attach importance to during the design process:

  • Good design offers easy navigation to the user.
  • Good design shows the answers in the right place at the right time to clear the question marks in their mind without the user having to click anywhere: Does the vehicle model I choose change? What are the additional service fees? What are the assurance options? What are the payment options? …
  • Good design is ergonomic design: It does not force the user to make critical choices in tight spaces, it allows the user to interact with the interface in an ergonomic way.

The usability tests of the website and mobile application of tazedirek.com, which has successfully entered the organic food sector and provides services to its customers with the assurance of Aslanoba Group, have been completed. The aim of tazedirekt.com, which preferred UXservices, which has considerable experience in user experience design and usability testing, was to find out what difficulties users encounter while using the website and mobile application and to find solutions to them.

The first step in the work done by UXservices was to create the right personas to reach the appropriate users for testing. In the studies, two personas were created and tests were carried out with users selected from each persona in their own environment (home, workplace, cafe, etc.) Tests were carried out in two phases. First of all, tests of the responsive website on desktop, tablet, and mobile were completed. Then, the tests of the mobile application were carried out and the usability reports of both phases were presented separately.

User Observation

The feedback and findings obtained from the users were also proof of how accurately the personas were created. The reactions and comments made by the users while viewing the site were recorded one by one. User behavior observed by UXservices usability experts was noted to be evaluated according to heuristic criteria.

The tasks requested from the users were evaluated and scored according to the international usability criteria (5E criteria: Efficiency, Effectiveness, Easy to Learn, Error Tolerant, Engaging).

The tests were completed with the SUS (System Usability Scale) questionnaire applied to each user. The answers to the SUS questionnaire given by each persona for the website and mobile application were reported separately.

Suggestions on how to fix the encountered problems were presented, in which user experience design layer these problems are located, at which stage of the design the mistake was made, and the order of importance of the problem.

Migros supermarkets offer many alternatives to their customers with online shopping, wholesale and telephone sales. Migros TV, the new project of Migros, which has always aimed to offer new services to its users with its strategy of being an innovative supermarket chain, takes the customer experience one step further.

On Migros TV, it is possible to find instructional videos in categories that can attract everyone’s attention;

  • Recipes,
  • Beauty care,
  • Technology, health life,
  • Mother-child,
  • How to do it,
  • Home care.

Migros aimed to determine the habits of the users and offer the most suitable platform to the users by having a usability test performed on this platform, where MigrosTV wanted to offer a more comfortable user experience to its users. As UXservices, we conducted A / B usability tests of both mobile and web versions of the application with a total of 15 people from the user profiles we determined in collaboration with our customers.

The purpose of this platform is to create an entertaining video platform by presenting videos on carefully selected topics suitable for the interests of its users.

Conclusion

We tested the responsive designed Migros TV on various devices using Android and iOS operating systems. We evaluate the findings we determined at the end of the test according to 5E (Efficiency – Effectiveness – Effectiveness, Easy to Learn – Easy Learning, Error Tolerant – Engaging – Satisfaction) usability criteria and We have presented our report by determining which layer corresponds to the Scope Layer, Structure – Architectural Layer, Skeleton – Skeleton Layer, Surface – Visual Design Layer. With the changes made as a result of these findings, Migros TV site met with its users.

UXservices, which has significant knowledge in Usability Testing and User Experience services, added Banvit, one of the leading companies in the white and red meat industry, to its customers.

Our customer, who has been operating the sales channel both in the markets and on the website until now, was planning to launch the responsive mobile website in order to provide a good user experience to its users on every device. Since this application was their first mobile experience, they wanted to see what kind of experience their customers would experience and where they might encounter difficulties.

In this context, usability tests were carried out by UXservices in the test environment before the mobile sites were presented to the user according to international criteria.

Project Stages

Working with Banvit, the personas who are expected to use their website were determined. Sufficient number of different people were determined for each persona.

Appropriate test scenarios were prepared by considering the purpose of accessing the Banvit website and behavioral information of each person.

Usability tests were performed in environments where users feel neutral (office, home…).

During the tests, camera recordings were taken in order to understand the difficulties experienced by the users and to analyze them afterwards. Apart from that, users are encouraged to think "out loud".

The findings of the tests were reported.

The findings of the test results were evaluated according to the 5E (Efficiency, Effectiveness, Easy to Learn, Error Tolerant, Engaging) usability criteria. It was reported which layer corresponds to the problems experienced by the customer in the 5-layer user experience design methodology. Suggestions were made within the scope of international heuristic criteria for each finding.

Eventually, though, they find out that there is no way around it, as a significant amount of their customers are letting this know in an unpleasant way. As designers, we always see the ideal world as a place where we can create things without racing against the clock.

Unfortunately, most of the time we do, which challenges us to come up with solutions to deliver the best possible quality in the least amount of time. We had one of those projects a few weeks ago, where we had just one week to redesign a user interface, which would affect the user experience of approximately 100.000 daily users.

Even though UX in Turkey is becoming more and more mature, there are still plenty of software companies that are not aware of the fact that listening to users can be very beneficial.

Some other software companies, on the other hand, are proactively looking at opportunities to continuously improve the usability of their products to increase client satisfaction. A couple of weeks ago, we have worked with Nebim, one of Turkey’s leading independent software vendors, which pursues the strategy of continuous UX improvement. Their product, Nebim V3 ERP, being the leading local Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software system geared towards non-food retail and wholesale market segment with tens of thousands of daily users, was receiving feedback from their customers’ end-users regarding opportunities of UX improvement, specifically in its reporting applications. Nebim was investing in on-site and remote training to assist end-users in how to leverage advanced options of their reporting applications, which on the long run was not a cost-effective approach.

This is where we stepped in. Our goal was to redesign the reporting-related applications of the product in such a way that it would be easy to learn for new customers, but also not that different to upset existing and advanced customers. Eventually, this should decrease the amount of time and resources spent on support and training. Sounds like a typical UX project, right?

But here is the fun part; we only had 7 days to deliver the designs…

Day 1: Get to Know Stakeholders

All of our projects start by learning the industry, audience, problems, needs, etc. of our client. During a kick-off meeting, we have a chat with all the stakeholders to discuss and understand these items more clearly, followed by a brainstorm session to find the best UX solution that will match their needs. Nebim challenged us to find a feasible solution before the start of their next Agile sprint, which meant we only had 7 days to finish the project.

In order to meet the schedule of the client, we came up with a methodology to deliver the best possible user-centred solution within the given timeframe. We thought Test-Driven Design was the way to go, which is an iterative testing method to design a product based on user feedback. This method would allow us to improve the product more effectively and efficiently, which was the exact thing we needed.

Day 2: Designing a Better Version

The following morning, the stakeholders organized a session where they walked us through their product. Our goal was to learn about the possibilities and constraints we could have with the current framework. It was also important to hear the most common problems users were facing when using the product. Luckily, the stakeholders we worked with are very involved with and care about their customers. Considering the time pressure, they were a good source of information to get an overall idea of the experience users were having.

After the session, our UX team started sketching three low-fidelity concepts based on everything we had learned. For this, we used Balsamiq, which, thanks to its library, is a rapid and effective way of creating low-fidelity wireframes and communicating concepts. To speed up things even more, we decided to work on-site. This way we worked closely with IT and business stakeholders, which allowed us to get feedback much faster.

Our goal for the day was to agree with the stakeholders on one final concept and have this ready to be prototyped the next day.

Day 3 Make it Clickable

Almost halfway through, we were already preparing for the user tests. The concept we had sketched and agreed upon with the stakeholders the day before had to be made interactive.

There are a lot of tools to make this happen. Deciding on the right prototyping tool depends on many factors, i.e. the platform of the product, types of interactions, importance of visual design, simulation, etc. By considering some of these factors, we had decided to use Justinmind. This tool matched our needs as it has rich libraries of UI elements for most platforms, many ways of handling interactions between pages, and an easy way of simulating the prototype for testing purposes.

Day 4, 5, 6, and 7: Test with Real Users

In the remaining four days of the project, we have focused on testing and improving the product we had designed and developed in the days before. As mentioned earlier, we had decided to use an iterative testing method, which means that we have several repetitions (iterations) of testing the product with actual users. Our goal was to conduct one full iteration per day. As we had four days left, this meant we could conduct four full iterations if everything would run smoothly.

Days before the start of the first iteration, we have discussed together with the stakeholders the number and types of users we would like to include in the tests. Based on our experience and the tight schedule, we had decided to include a number of four users per iteration, which would mean we would require a total of 16 users for the entire project. Luckily, Nebim was helpful in taking care of the recruitment of users, which saved us a lot of time.

Planning one full iteration per day seemed like a challenge at the start but was actually quite fun and viable. We started each iteration with the user tests early in the morning. Testing with four users would take us approximately 2 to 3 hours. During each session, we listened, observed, and took notes. After all user sessions were completed, we needed an hour or so to list and summarize the findings, after which we presented the results of the iteration to the stakeholders.

In this 1-hour meeting, we discussed the highlights of the iteration, brainstormed possible solutions, and compiled a list of to-dos that should be brought into the next iteration. After the meeting and in the remaining 2 to 3 hours, we quickly updated the prototype based on the to-do list and prepared for the next iteration. The same process was repeated for each of the four iterations that we have completed in the following days.

Conclusion

The Test-Driven Design methodology we used has showed us that designing with time constraints does not have to be a reason for unsuccessful UX. Or does it? Both Nebim and its users are confident that we have put an improved design on the table, which at the moment is being developed and to be launched in the following weeks. Time will tell if the changes we have made will affect the experience of our client’s customers in a positive way…
